AFRICAN CHILD BY ONYECHE VINCENT ONYEKACHUKWU
In riches and peaceful paradise
I’m an African child
Born into the harsh weather
I’m an African child
Who must trench further
I’m an African child
Ashamed, not of coal complexion
I’m an African child
The finest creature
I’m an African child
Proud of my culture
I’m an African child
Filled of strength and power
I’m an African child
Far away from defeat
I’m an African child
Whose smile calms the wild beast
I’m an African child
Who aims at an indefinite limit
I’m an African child
So blessed with talents
I’m an African child
Who fights for justice
I’m an African child
Crying loud by casualties
I’m an African child
Whose blood made the soils
I’m an African child
Who never pray for war
I’m an African child
Renamed by slavery
I’m an African child
Vocalizing the one language of love
I’m an African child
Who dances to the true African music
The world shouldn’t be complete
Without the African child.

Powerful and beautiful. Both of my children were born in Africa, though we are Americans. Still, we grew to know those around us in special ways and to love the land, the beauty, the heart that beats with its own echoes in Africa and beyond. Thank you so much for this.

I cannot ever fully understand your struggle. But I promise I will try to understand it to the best of my ability. Your poetry helps me tremendously in this regard. We left Africa nearly 10 years ago for family reasons. I would go back in a heartbeat. Keep writing and sharing!

nice piece. I love being African. Especially a Nigerian. An African is hardly knocked down by odd circumstances.

Hardly knocked down by odd circumstances. In essence you’re saying we only get knocked down by the commonplace and cheap. Eh??

Nope I am just trying to say that it is very difficult for anything, no matter how strange to knock a typical African child down.

the caste of humanity.

I agree my friend. I believe Africa is the key to peace. The world need the ancient wisdom. Need the four corners of our world to work as one. Every life had value. One earth and one people.
