We are more than thick short hairs
We are proudly Africans…
Ashamed, not of our colour
For it is our greatest honor.
Connected by the root of trees
Covalently united by our spirits
We are bonds that never dissolve
While aiming at an indefinite limit.
Demonstrating with lots of love
Dancing to the rhythm in our sound
Our spirit would definitely be lost,
If we weren’t an African child.

As a redhead I really loved the line “Ashamed, not of our colour For it is our greatest honor.” I think this poem is so beautiful and empowering. What a lucky little girl to have you as her uncle, encouraging her to embrace her beauty and heritage. X

I’ve always been a minority. I was born in East London & was the only white kid at playgroup but I was so loved and accepted. Then we moved to a quiet coastal town and I was only 2y old but terrified that everyone was white! Then I got picked on or worshipped for being different because I had wild red hair. It made me very insecure because I then became aware of colour and didn’t fit in anywhere – I wanted to be a wallflower & blend in. As u grew up I saw the beauty in how everyone is unique (not just me) and I even did modelling for a few years in my mid 20s. Modelling is full of diversity, I met so many unique and beautiful people. All I want for my kids is for them to be confident in their own skin and embrace the differences of everyone. My son has the most diverse set of friends, he has no idea he has chosen all the minority backgrounds as his best friends but I’m proud that he doesn’t see them as another group, they are his community, his friends from his Nursery that he chose.
